Around 2017 was, unfortunately, the third time I had ended up in the ER in two months.
From the outside, my life looked like I was doing well. I was in the second year of my medical program doing a doctorate in Traditional Chinese Medicine, I had written multiple books, and the year before had quit my part-time jobs because I was making enough money from my side hustle (being an author).
Lots of my long-term life goals were coming true, and it seemed like I had done a good job of knowing how to achieve goals.
And then I got really sick.
I was actually in the middle of recording my audiobook for my book, Master the Day, when I started having persistent heart palpitations, and then when we finished, felt abnormally exhausted, called my dad and said,
“I think i’m having a heart attack.”
I immediately began driving to the ER, and the radiating sensation of chest pain, my left arm tingling, and shortness of breath began kicking in.
I swallowed hard, and drove as fast as I could to the ER.

The next few years were in and out of doctors’ offices, integrative medicine clinics, and working with alternative practitioners trying to figure out how I had stressed myself out so badly.
It culminated in a shamanic journey in Mexico, where I did several healing ceremonies, to try and figure out what I needed to do, how I needed to live differently, etc. going forward.
I had to literally make sure that next time, I didn’t die.
Here's where I did the healing ceremonies:
After those healing, shamanic journeys, I began asking a different question.
I had always been health conscious, how on earth did I manage to make myself so sick? I mean, I didn’t even gain five pounds, because I ate well and worked out. I didn’t drink coffee daily. I was someone who (it seemed, anyway) was living a healthy life.
How did I miss all the signs and symptoms of burnout?
That following year, I stayed in a monastery in Chengdu, on a trip with some mentors from my doctoral program, and I had a chance to have some life-altering talks with doctors of traditional Chinese medicine:
A monk that I met there told me something interesting: he said, "any emotional state that produces resistance (or resisting anything in your life you do not like) creates energy blockages that create disease."
That’s when I realized my mentality -- constant desire to achieve, not having enough time, having to keep going, always having too much to do -- set into motion a flywheel that began with the “energy” of the body, but ultimately, pushed me physiologically via the nervous system into extreme burnout.
The chronic fatigue, wired but tired, constant anxiety/low grade depression, insomnia every single day… these were just the downstream effects. And they were the result of the last three years of how I'd been living.
And what’s more, this is the reality of millions of mothers, entrepreneurs, high achievers, or people going through life tragedies and traumas every day - they may just not know it yet - until it’s too late.
I'm the author of "Master the Day," and several other books.
I have two Youtube channels with 500,000+ subscribers, focused on healing with Traditional Chinese medicine, as well as how to improve your life.
I'm also a board-licensed Doctor of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
After a series of difficult health crises, I realized that I had learned a lot about "external" goal setting (as I like to call it), but I really knew nothing about the inner goal setting process.
Unfortunately, I hadn't figured out how to be successful -- while staying happy and healthy through the inner practices that generate flow in your life. As a result, I got incredibly sick.
"You’re Exhausted… But Your Lab Tests Say You’re Fine."
You’ve done everything “right.”
You eat clean. You try to sleep. You even drag yourself to workouts (when you can).
But no matter what, you wake up tired.
You crash mid-afternoon.
You feel wired at night — even though your body is begging for rest.
And when you finally go to your doctor for answers?
They run some tests. Maybe check your thyroid.
And then they tell you…
“Everything looks normal. You’re fine.”
But you know you’re not fine.
You know something’s off.
You don’t feel like yourself anymore.
You used to have drive. Focus. Energy. Motivation.
Now you feel like you're running on fumes.
What you’re experiencing has a name — and a root cause.
It’s not solved with another blood test. Or more caffeine.
It’s not something a prescription pill will fix.
This is burnout. This is adrenal fatigue.
And there is a way back.
Maybe you’ve been told it’s just stress… or age… or hormones… or that it’s all in your head. But inside, you know something’s off.
This is what many call “adrenal fatigue”—and while conventional medicine may not recognize it, Traditional Chinese Medicine has treated it for centuries.
TCM doesn’t dismiss your symptoms just because your bloodwork is “normal.” Instead, it sees your fatigue as a pattern of imbalance that can be reversed—by supporting your body’s natural energy systems (like your Kidney Qi, Spleen Qi, and Heart-Shen).
Here’s what that means for you:
Conventional medicine doesn't help you recover from chronic fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, and more, because of a few key reasons.
If you’ve been told to “rest more,” but your body just isn’t responding—that’s a sign of deeper imbalance, not personal failure.
In biomedicine, “adrenal fatigue” is not an accepted diagnosis; the Endocrine Society states there’s “no scientific basis” for it. As a result, patients with chronic fatigue, burnout, and stress-related symptoms are often told “everything looks normal.”
In contrast, TCM has described syndromes identical to what we call adrenal fatigue for centuries—such as Kidney Qi Deficiency, Kidney Yin Deficiency, and Spleen Qi Deficiency (《黄帝内经》Huang Di Nei Jing, 《难经》Nan Jing). These patterns match modern presentations of exhaustion, poor sleep, brain fog, low libido, and dizziness.
While “adrenal fatigue” lacks biomedical recognition, it mirrors Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is recognized.
✅ A 2022 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Pharmacology analyzed 84 studies involving 6,896 patients and found that Chinese herbal medicine was significantly more effective than placebo or Western medicine in reducing fatigue severity and improving quality of life for CFS patients.
Acupuncture has been shown to regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the system most often associated with burnout and stress adaptation.
🧪 A 2021 study published in Neural Regeneration Research showed acupuncture improved fatigue symptoms and modulated cortisol levels and ACTH in animal models of fatigue.🧬 fMRI studies also show that acupuncture can influence the limbic system, helping to calm stress responses.
Recent research suggests mitochondrial dysfunction is a key factor in both CFS and burnout.TCM herbs such as Astragalus membranaceus (Huang Qi) and Panax ginseng (Ren Shen) have demonstrated the ability to:
🧪 A study in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy (2020) found that a TCM formula containing Astragalus enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and improved physical endurance in rats with induced fatigue.
Low-grade, chronic inflammation is often found in those with chronic fatigue and stress-related exhaustion.
🔬 TCM herbs such as Licorice (Gan Cao), Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi), and Rehmannia (Shu Di Huang) have been shown to reduce TNF-α, IL-6, and other pro-inflammatory cytokines.
📚 A 2019 review in Journal of Ethnopharmacology confirmed that many TCM formulas reduce neuroinflammation and support immune regulation—key factors in fatigue recovery.
Many patients with adrenal fatigue are offered SSRIs, SNRIs, or benzodiazepines—which can worsen fatigue or dependency.
📊 A systematic review (2018, BMC Complement Altern Med) found that TCM herbal formulas for CFS not only reduced fatigue but also anxiety and depression symptoms, without the side effects of pharmaceuticals.
TCM sees emotional states like overthinking (伤脾), chronic fear (伤肾), and anger (伤肝) as direct causes of organ-level imbalance. Treatments like acupuncture and herbal medicine help regulate shen (spirit) and soothe the nervous system.
📚 Studies show acupuncture increases serotonin and dopamine levels, and reduces activity in the amygdala (fear center of the brain), helping restore emotional balance.
Conventional treatment focuses on managing symptoms—often with prescriptions that don’t address the root cause.
TCM aims to tonify the source of your energy, correct imbalances, and restore your ability to adapt to stress long-term. Practices like acupuncture, qi gong, and dietary therapy not only heal, but teach you how to live in balance.
