Around 2017 was, unfortunately, the third time I had ended up in the ER in two months.
From the outside, my life looked like I was doing well. I was in the second year of my medical program doing a doctorate in Traditional Chinese Medicine, I had written multiple books, and the year before had quit my part-time jobs because I was making enough money from my side hustle (being an author).
Lots of my long-term life goals were coming true, and it seemed like I had done a good job of knowing how to achieve goals.
And then I got really sick.
I was actually in the middle of recording my audiobook for my book, Master the Day, when I started having persistent heart palpitations, and then when we finished, felt abnormally exhausted, called my dad and said,Â
“I think i’m having a heart attack.”
I immediately began driving to the ER, and the radiating sensation of chest pain, my left arm tingling, and shortness of breath began kicking in.
I swallowed hard, and drove as fast as I could to the ER.Â

The next few years were in and out of doctors’ offices, integrative medicine clinics, and working with alternative practitioners trying to figure out how I had stressed myself out so badly.
It culminated in a shamanic journey in Mexico, where I did several healing ceremonies, to try and figure out what I needed to do, how I needed to live differently, etc. going forward.Â
I had to literally make sure that next time, I didn’t die.
Here's where I did the healing ceremonies:
After those healing, shamanic journeys, I began asking a different question.Â
I had always been health conscious, how on earth did I manage to make myself so sick? I mean, I didn’t even gain five pounds, because I ate well and worked out. I didn’t drink coffee daily. I was someone who (it seemed, anyway) was living a healthy life.
How did I miss all the signs and symptoms of burnout?
That following year, I stayed in a monastery in Chengdu, on a trip with some mentors from my doctoral program, and I had a chance to have some life-altering talks with doctors of traditional Chinese medicine:
A monk that I met there told me something interesting: he said, "any emotional state that produces resistance (or resisting anything in your life you do not like) creates energy blockages that create disease."
That’s when I realized my mentality -- constant desire to achieve, not having enough time, having to keep going, always having too much to do -- set into motion a flywheel that began with the “energy” of the body, but ultimately, pushed me physiologically via the nervous system into extreme burnout.
The chronic fatigue, wired but tired, constant anxiety/low grade depression, insomnia every single day… these were just the downstream effects. And they were the result of the last three years of how I'd been living.
And what’s more, this is the reality of millions of mothers, entrepreneurs, high achievers, or people going through life tragedies and traumas every day - they may just not know it yet - until it’s too late.
I'm the author of "Master the Day," and several other books.Â
I have two Youtube channels with 500,000+ subscribers, focused on healing with Traditional Chinese medicine, as well as how to improve your life.
I'm also a board-licensed Doctor of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
After a series of difficult health crises, I realized that I had learned a lot about "external" goal setting (as I like to call it), but I really knew nothing about the inner goal setting process.Â
Unfortunately, I hadn't figured out how to be successful -- while staying happy and healthy through the inner practices that generate flow in your life. As a result, I got incredibly sick.
In the 1900s, a researcher named Hans Selye, who was later nominated for the nobel prize, began studying a new field: the field of stress. Primarily, he was focusing on studying something about what prolonged stress does to animals, and he discovered that there were three stages:
The three phases of stress. Wikipedia commons.
Dr. Selye's 1930's experiments noted that short-term stress produced an alarm response (for example, being startled in the woods), but prolonged stress began to show a whole host of systemic damage to the organism or person:
"The initial nervous symptoms could even reappear instead of go away (panic attacks, muscle aches, sore eyes, difficulty breathing, fatigue, heartburn, high blood pressure, and difficulty sleeping, etc.)."
Long term, if the organism wasn't given a chance to heal, it could develop diabetes, cardiovascular issues, clinical depression, or more.Â
Physicians in the east had documented "deficiency taxation" (nervous exhaustion) for well over 2,000 years too. Here's what they said.
Two famous doctors made observations about "nervous exhaustion" going back almost 2,000 years. Famous doctor Sun Simiao and family herbalist Zhang Zhong Jing brought up a term in ancient texts 虛癆 (Xu Lao). This term is sometimes translated as "deficiency taxation" and they noted it can arise from a few circumstances:
- Chronic overwork:Â For example, a laborer or worker who over-exhausts themselves from doing too much.
- Nervous exhaustion:Â People who either over worry, over stress, have sources of anxiety in their life (their income, their kids or family, safety concerns, etc.). The stress of loneliness or feeling vulnerable.
- The result of chronic disease: For example, some people are sick for years with autoimmune disease, lyme disease, or have anxiety and sleeping problems for years, leading to general exhaustion of resources.
- The result of battling a difficult illness (or even acute infection): For example, Mozart was sick and struck with a powerful fever; ever since that time, he had a constant feeling he was never the same, and wasn't going to live a long life. And it was true, he didn't.Â
- Post-partum: Some women never are the same after childbirth. Many women develop post-partum depression as a result of general exhaustion-- and they need to be supplementing with herbal formulas as soon as possible.
Their advice on healing? Use the traditional formulas to recharge the batteries.
Imagine if, like so many of us, a physician says to just medicate the symptoms away -- but there's no healing involved?
You most likely feel:
- Wired but tired
- Can’t fall asleep, but once you do, you feel okay
- Elevated heart rate
- Stressed
- Indigestion
You most likely feel:
- Consistent insomnia (or insomnia most of the time) / waking in the night
- Nervous: Elevated heart rate (sometimes even hours after work), palpitations, feeling on edge
- GI: Indigestion, acid reflux, or alternating bowel patterns
- Stressed all the time - for no reason
You most likely feel:
-Â Depression
- Exhaustion
- Autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, etc.
- No stress tolerance (one cup of coffee makes you anxious for hours, one tantrum from your child and you’re off all day/don’t sleep well.)
Â
It was known in ancient China - that after a grand fever or illness (like Mozart), or exhausting oneself physically, etc. a person can move into a state of “Deficiency taxation” - 虛癆. This is the reality for so many of us literally every single day, the single mothers, the professionals working 50-60-70 hours, the caretakers who exhaust themselves into an early grave, or even the stress of loneliness.
There are three steps:
RESET: Ultimately, the reason that many of us overwork ourselves into an early grave is a lot like a car driving too fast on a highway on a hot summer day. The engine is running too hot -- and the only way to let it cool down is to stop accelerating or turn it off.Â
We focus on: Resetting the adrenals & nervous system: Resetting the "Qi Dynamic."
CONNECT: Ancient doctors believed that the smooth flow of Qi was what predicted disease or a long life. Blockages in Qi flow create blockages in organ flow, which leads to disease. Ever resisted a job your boss dropped on your lap, and get a stress-induced headache? Then you know this is real.
We focus on: Getting your body out of fight or flight: Reconnecting Heart & Kidney - an ancient term for nervous system reset, fixing the grounding rods, stabilizing the adrenals.
RESTORE: Why did it take me five years to feel well and heal from my own "nervous exhaustion" or adrenal fatigue? I had damaged the battery charge. From a TCM point of view, the battery charge (kidneys) is what determines resistance to illness, longevity, and life or death.
We focus on: Restoring the battery charge permanently (Yang Qi), so you don't get sick again. You'll go from 10% > 80%.
"With medication, my symptoms just kept coming back... I'm amazed now that they went away... and they haven't come back."

This 5-week online program is an online program designed to help you assess your level of burnout or nervous system dysregulation:
Over the five weeks we cover how you ended up here, diagnosing your level of burnout from a traditional Chinese medicine & biomedical point of view, applying traditional herbal formulas from famous physicians over 2,000 years, learning energetic tools like qigong and acupressure, as well as learning the lifestyle roadmap to make your life your medicine – so you don’t end up here again.
Â
This module is the introduction to how TCM views adrenal fatigue. We are really going to highlight how the TCM approach is very different, and why it produces long-term healing where often conventional medicine does not.
Â
Ultimately, TCM is all about what foods, herbs, acupuncture, and life does to your "Qi Dynamic" -- the interface between Qi flow and physiology.Â
At the end of the day, if your life was what produced disease, you have to change your life. This module I call "making your life your medicine" and is all about understanding how you got sick -- so that you can do the opposite going forward.
Beginning in week one of the program, you have access to recorded Q/A calls with Dr. Heyne to answer any questions that are coming up in the process of going through the course.
Â
This program is something I had developed last year, to help people implement a specific kind of nutrition to help increase their energy.Â

Look, if you don’t absolutely LOVE this program, I want to give you your money back. Look, the vast majority of people in the health industry try to show you some “revolutionary” B.S. But the truth is that healing is pretty simple if you have guidance (not easy), and anyone who tells you differently is a liar or is trying to sell you some stupid ab wheel.
If this program doesn’t give you EVERYTHING you need – all the answers – I’ll give you all your money back. Just shoot my team a quick one-line email anytime in 60 days and I’ll give you your money back.
Do you want to wait five years to feel better, like I did, or feel better in five weeks? Learn the material now -- and apply it on your healing journey for life.
